A challenging high level holiday
trekking in the Torres del Paine National Park in Chile, walking in the
dramatic Mt Fitzroy region of Argentina; includes visit to the Moreno Glacier.
Fuller detail
Patagonia in the southernmost portion of South America
contains some of the most awe-inspiring scenery in the world. It is a land of
wilderness where broad expanses of pampa meet the glacially sculpted spires of
the Andes. Unique in its flora and fauna, and the wind blows strongly here much
of the time. This high level holiday includes the spectacular 5-night 'W' trek
in Las Torres del Paine National Park taking you to the foot of the soaring
spires of Las Torres and close to Glacier Grey. We will also visit the
spectacular Moreno glacier where huge blocks fall off into Lake Argentino to
float away as ice bergs. The holiday finishes with 3 days walking in the
magnificent Mt Fitzroy region of the Andes, including walking past Laguna de
los Tres to reach close up views of Fitzroy's incredible North Face. Though not
at altitude, non-technical, with day pack only, the walking in these areas is
strenuous with plenty of 'up', and some long days in challenging terrain. The
accommodation will be in hotels in Buenos Aries, tents or refuges on trek, and
a hostel in Chalten near Fitzroy. Besides the internal flight between Buenos
Aries and El Calafete, there will be a total 19 hours of transfer by minibus
during the trip:
north on Route 40 to the Paine National Park, and south to el
Chalten. The first and last nights are spent in Buenos Aries with time to
relax, take a city tour, see the historic area of San Isidro, or shop for
souvenirs. The holiday includes the flight from London Heathrow to Buenos
Aires. (See WW website Accommodation page for the full itinerary).

1-8 Feb - Alpine
Skiing La Tania 1, France Full |
| Suits all skiers, incl.
beginners - Diana & Madeline |
|
| 7 nights catered
chalet - excluding flight: £615 |
Our first 2009 La Tania
week is in February for a change - superb skiing in Courchevel and the Trois
Vallees of the French Alps. Suits all levels of skier from beginners to
advanced.
Fuller
detail - La Tania 1350m is a small friendly resort just outside
Courchevel with easy access to the Courchevel slopes and the superb Trois
Vallees ski area. There are slopes here to suit all abilities, and with 15 of
us in total there'll be plenty of company to attend ski school with or to ski
with in small groups. For this holiday we have exclusive use of Chalet Nicole
which has been so appreciated by other WW groups in the past. Chalet Nicole is
run by a small chalet company called 'Family-Friendly Skiing'. The chalet has a
convenient ski-in/ski-out position near the bottom of the red run into La Tania
- just above the telecabine which accesses all of the Courchevel slopes.
Alternatively it's a short walk from the blue run. Chalet staff drive beginners
to ski school in their minibus, and pick you up later to make life easy!
(English speaking instructors).
The chalet has 7 twin bedrooms and 1 single, all fully
ensuite, mostly with baths. The single room is smaller and has a shower
(£10 a night single supplement). The chalet has a good-sized
lounge/dining room on the 2nd floor built around an open fire. There's a sauna
downstairs, and a hot tub outdoors for an after ski soak! Breakfast &
evening meals will be prepared for us by the chalet staff except for the one
evening we go out to eat. The food was very good last year.
Courchevel has snow
conditions to dream about due to its largely north facing slopes, its height,
and its large number of snow cannons right down to the village. La Tania was
originally built as an Olympic village with lots of chalets, après ski
bars and little restaurants. It probably has the friendliest atmosphere of all
the Courchevel resorts. It is approached by lovely tree runs - a blue and a red
- and enjoys very fast access to the higher slopes and a good lift connection
to both Courchevel and adjacent Meribel.

A fabulous
2-week intermediate holiday in Nepal. Includes time in Kathmandu and Pokhara,
and a 6-day tea house trek in the Annapurna region...
Fuller
detail -
The incredible
experience of trekking in Nepal need not be purely for high level walkers. The
Hindu and Buddhist temples of Kathmandu, the amazing medieval city of Baktapur,
the serenity of Phewa Tal ('Fish Tail Lake') in Pokhara, and the breath taking
views of the Himalaya are all features of this intermediate holiday to Nepal
with Linda - including a 6-day circular trek to Gorapani in the Annapurna
region. At Gorapani, weather permitting, we'll climb Poon Hill and watch the
sun rise over the magnificent Annapurna range. There'll be bamboo forests and
huge rhododendron trees in flower, monkeys in the trees, steep stone steps that
we'll take as slowly as we need, and little villages dotting the terraced
hillsides where we'll stop for tea. While staying at Pokhara before the trek,
we will have a warm-up walk to Sunrise View at Sarankot, and maybe cross the
lake by boat to climb to the Peace Temple for another special view of the
mountains. The walks on this holiday are to the full limit of Intermediate, and
on one trekking day we will be walking uphill for 6 hours. Our accommodation
over this holiday will vary from 3-star hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara to
simple tea houses on the trek (basic accommodation with clean rooms and
filtered water. Some have squat toilets). Luggage is transported for you - you

21-28 Apr - High Intermediate La

Canaries |

| 7 nights part board, flight,
ferry & all transport: £695 |
An exciting trek around the circular
island of La Gomera in the Canaries. Grand rock monoliths, exotic flowers, sea
cliffs plunging to crystal clear waters... La Gomera has it all! (Day pack only
throughout)
Fuller detail
La Gomera is one of the smallest of the
inhabited Canary islands, 30 minutes south of Tenerife by ferry. Few places in
the world have the natural wealth of this circular volcanic island: misty
northern laurel forests, scorched canyons, grand rock monoliths, palm groves,
and sea cliffs plunging to crystal clear water below. Ancient tracks and trails
thread through this landscape, allowing us to make an anti-clockwise circuit of
the central volcanic massif, Alto de Garajonay. After a first hotel night in
San Sebastian, we'll walk from Agulo to Vallehermosa, staying here at another
comfortable small hotel for 2 nights to allow a stunning sea cliff walk in this
corner of the island. We then ascend to characterful Pension Sonia in Chipude,
high on the central massif and close to the summit. The next day is long but
breathtaking, descending to Playa Santiago on the sunny south coast for 2
nights in apartments by the sea - a wonderful place to take a rest day or catch
a boat trip around the island. From here our last day's walk back to San
Sebastian is striking. We then have a last night in San Sebastian to celebrate
before catching the ferry back to Tenerife for our flights home. Guided by
Marian. (You carry a day pack only - luggage is transported).

2-9 May - Low Intermediate Mull 1
Full |
| Small hotel - Fran - Scotland |
|
| 7 nights full board, includes
trip to Iona : £650 |
A wonderful week exploring some of
Fran's favourite walks on Mull, staying in a comfortable women-run B&B
above a lovely deserted cove with views to die for!
Fuller detail
Mull is one of the largest of the Hebridean
islands off the west coast of Scotland. It has a long and strikingly beautiful
coastline of high cliffs and bays, with caves and rock arches, and views out to
the many smaller islands that surround it. Most notable of these is the 'Holy
Isle' of Iona where we will walk on one day. Another rewarding visit might be
to cathedral-like Fingle's Cave on the island of Staffa, whose geometrical
basalt pillars have even inspired a Mendelssohn overture! On other days we will
take beautiful walks along Mull's coastline, stopping at sandy bays, or walking
to other famous caves and rock features. Inland, our eyes will often be drawn
to the island's only munro, Ben Mor, and from a walk over its lower shoulder
there will be striking views back to the coast. We will be staying at women-run
Ardachy House Hotel on the south coast, overlooking the deserted sands of
Ardalanish Bay and the islands of Jura, Colonsay, and Islay. Iona is only 7
miles away; seals, otters and the elusive Corncrake are regular visitors to the
area, and there is a standing stone and Iron Age fort close by. The hotel
offers comfortable ensuite twin, double, and single bedrooms, and some of the
bedrooms and the residents' lounge have a lovely view towards the sea. Mull is
reached by train from Glasgow to Oban, then a magical ferry to Craignure on
Mull, & local bus from the ferry to Bunassen where Maggie & Cathy will
collect you. Guided by Fran.

flight & all except the meals: £675 |
Coast paths above the emerald sea,
stunning gorges including famous Samaria, and a tranquil, unspoilt place to
stay that you wouldn't think existed any more. Guided by Diana.
Fuller detail
Here is an opportunity with
Diana to spend a relaxed week in Crete, exploring some of the gorges and coast
paths in the south of this magical island. May is a delightful month to walk in
Crete - when the sun is not too hot and the island is still green with many
wild flowers and aromatic herbs. We'll be staying on the south coast in Maria
and Christina's lovely ensuite sea-view Oasis Rooms at Polirizos beach - a tiny
un-spoilt hamlet beside a cove consisting of little more than a few tavernas.
From here, there are beautiful coastal paths above the emerald sea - stopping
for a dip if we please, and we'll visit the amazing gorges of Imbros and famous
Samaria - taking a bus and taxi via Hania to Samaria, and starting our descent
later than most so that we have its amazing scenery virtually to ourselves. At
the bottom of the gorge, we will stay for a night at Agia Roumeli's Hotel
Calypso, and walk back along the coast via Loutro the next day. There will also
be a day-off from walking to enjoy the beautiful beach around the headland -
where you can swim as topless or bottomless as you wish!
Maria and Christina's Oasis
Rooms are comfortable and ensuite, with a balcony overlooking the sea, and a
kitchen area for breakfast. It is much simpler here to each buy our own food
for breakfast & packed lunches - much of which we can do at a good
supermarket on our way from the airport. We can then ask Maria to order us
fresh bread daily for breakfast, and we can buy butter, honey, yoghurt, cheese,
tomatoes and anything else we need at the little shop in Rothakino. In the
evenings we'll eat out at the tavernas by the sea (from £8). (Ensuite
single suppl. £10 a night)

trans + return travel: £675 |
A chance to walk the famous West
Highland Way - one of the most spectacular long distance paths in the
UK.
Fuller detail
The West Highland Way is one of the most
breathtaking long distance paths, following ancient trails steeped in history
through some of the most spectacular scenery in Britain - from the Scottish
lowlands near Glasgow to Fort William near the foot of Ben Nevis in the
Highlands. There'll be bluebells on the shores of Loch Lomond, dramatic
waterfalls in Glen Falloch, the bleak expanses of Rannoch Moor, and the
dramatic Highland scenery of Glencoe and Lairigmor. We start from Drymen,
missing out the first road walking section from Glasgow. From Drymen it is 83
glorious miles to Fort William, averaging 12 miles and 340m of ascent a day
over 7 walking days. On the way we stay mostly in ensuite twin rooms in
B&Bs, old coaching inns, and small hotels. (No nights in hostels this
year). Guided by Sue M. (Luggage is transported by taxi).

12-19 May - Intermediate Crete 2
Full |
| Sea view rooms - Marian & Yvonne -
Greece |
|
| 7 nights - incl.
flight & all except the meals: £675 |
Coast paths above the emerald sea,
stunning gorges including famous Samaria, and a tranquil, unspoilt place to
stay that you wouldn't think existed any more. Guided by Marian.
Fuller detail
This second Crete holiday is guided by Marian - a
relaxed week exploring some of the gorges and coast paths in the south of this
magical island. May is a delightful month to walk in Crete - when the sun is
not too hot and the island is still green with many wild flowers and aromatic
herbs. We'll be staying on the south coast in Maria and Christina's lovely
ensuite sea-view Oasis Rooms at Polirizos beach - a tiny un-spoilt hamlet
beside a cove consisting of little more than a few tavernas. From here, there
are beautiful coastal paths above the emerald sea - stopping for a dip if we
please, and we'll visit the amazing gorges of Imbros and famous Samaria -

16-22 May - High Level
Rum |
| Castle hostel & bothy - Fran -
Scotland |
|
| 6 nights full board:
£490 |
This high level holiday with Fran is
to the beautiful and mysterious isle of Rum off the west coast of Scotland....
a total Scottish walking experience!
Fuller detail
Rum is a diamond shaped jewel
of a place - an island of the Inner Hebrides of spectacular wildness and
beauty. Its glaciated 'cullins' (high rocks) Askival, Hellival, Trollaval, and
Orval, started life near the equator, and are the shattered remnants of a once
huge volcano. Apart from its incredible scenery, Rum has been a nature reserve
for over 40 years. We may be lucky and see otters fishing along the shores of
Loch Scresort, or red deer and wild goats in the heather as we walk. Golden
eagles often soar above the Cullins, while Shearwaters nest on their slopes and
skim the sea in significant numbers. There are many fabulous high walks to
choose from here, often off-path through the heather - along high cliffs
overlooking the sea, onto peaks with stunning views, or looking north to the
Skye Cullins from beautiful Kilmory Sands. To access the best parts of this
island, we will stay for 2 nights in a bothy,
walking there low level with 3 days' food and gear,
living in very simple bothy conditions with water from a nearby stream and
sleeping mats on the floor - a real Scottish walking experience! The rest of
the time our base will be the hostel in extraordinary Kinloch Castle near Loch
Scresort. Trains run from Glasgow to Malaig, and from Malaig you catch the
regular Rum ferry which is a magical journey in itself.
