A second
opportunity to join this fabulous 2-week intermediate holiday in Nepal.
Includes time in Kathmandu and Pokhara, and a 6-day tea house trek in the
Annapurna region...
Fuller
detail -
The incredible experience of trekking in
Nepal need not be purely for high level walkers. The Hindu and Buddhist temples
of Kathmandu, the amazing medieval city of Baktapur, the serenity of Phewa Tal
('Fish Tail Lake') in Pokhara, and the breath taking views of the Himalaya are
all features of this intermediate holiday to Nepal - including a 6-day circular
trek to Gorapani in the Annapurna region. At Gorapani, weather permitting,
we'll climb Poon Hill and watch the sun rise over the magnificent Annapurna
range. There'll be bamboo forests and huge rhododendron trees in flower,
monkeys in the trees, steep stone steps that we'll take as slowly as we need,
and little villages dotting the terraced hillsides where we'll stop for tea.
From Pokhara before the trek, we will have a warm-up walk to Sunrise View at
Sarankot, and maybe cross the lake by boat to climb to the Peace Temple. The
walks on this holiday are to the full limit of Intermediate, and on 1 day we
will be walking uphill for 6 hours. We will stay in 3- star hotels in Kathmandu
& Pokhara, and simple tea houses on the trek (basic accommodation with
clean rooms and filtered water. Some have squat toilets). Luggage is
transported for you - you carry a day pack only.

Marian - enjoying the stunning scenery of the Alpujarras from the sleepy

and create a paradise for walkers. Moorish influences can still be seen in the
little villages with narrow streets and white-washed houses that seem to hang
on the hillsides. Forest tracks and intermediate mountain paths wind through a
landscape rich in wildlife - boar, ibex, foxes, wild cats, and many birds,
while in the valleys vines, almonds and olives are grown and mules still toil
in the fields. This holiday is based on the edge of Los Berchules village with
a backdrop of the snowcapped Cerro Gordo. Hotel Los Berchules offers good
ensuite twin rooms and plenty of singles, a comfortable bar and lounge with an
open fire for cooler evenings, a wide outside terrace with lovely views, and

20-27 Apr - High Intermediate La
Gomera |
| Hotel, pension & rooms - Marian -
Canaries |
|
| 7 nights part board, ferry &
all transport to walks: £625 |
An exciting trek around the circular
island of La Gomera in the Canaries. Grand rock monoliths, exotic flowers, sea
cliffs plunging to crystal clear waters... La Gomera has it all! (Day pack only
throughout)
Fuller detail
La Gomera is one of the smallest of the inhabited
Canary islands, 30 minutes south of Tenerife by ferry. Few places in the world
have the natural wealth of this circular volcanic island: misty northern laurel
forests, scorched canyons, grand rock monoliths, palm groves, and sea cliffs
plunging to crystal clear water below. Ancient tracks and trails thread through
this landscape, allowing us to make an anti-clockwise circuit of the central
volcanic massif, Alto de Garajonay. After a first hotel night in San Sebastian,
we'll walk from Agulo to Vallehermosa, staying here in another comfortable
small hotel for 2 nights to allow a stunning sea cliff walk in this corner of
the island. We then ascend to characterful Pension Sonia in Chipude, high on
the central massif and close to the summit. The next day is long but
breathtaking, descending to Playa Santiago on the sunny south coast for 2
nights in apartments by the sea - a wonderful place to take a rest day or catch
a boat trip around the island. From here our last day's walk back to San
Sebastian is striking. We then have a last night in San Sebastian to celebrate
before catching the ferry back to Tenerife for our flights home. Guided by
Marian. (Day pack only throughout - luggage is transported by taxi).

fells with fabulous views, spring flowers, the first lambs - and we'll be well
placed to enjoy it all at the Glaramara Centre near Seatoller. Though its
décor is simple and like a hostel in some respects, Glaramara has mainly
single rooms without a supplement, serves good food, and is fantastic value in
every way. Its bar and large comfy lounge both have open log fires, and the
general atmosphere is warm and friendly. From here we can access all the best

Coast paths above the emerald sea,
stunning gorges including famous Samaria, and a tranquil, unspoilt place to
stay that you wouldn't think existed any more.
Fuller detail
This is the first of two opportunities this
year to spend a relaxed week in Crete exploring some of the gorges and coast
paths in the south and southwest of this magical island. May is a delightful
month to walk in Crete - when the sun is not too hot and the island is still
green with many wild flowers and aromatic herbs. We'll be staying on the south
coast in Maria and Christina's lovely ensuite sea-view Oasis Rooms at Polirizos
beach - a tiny un-spoilt hamlet beside a cove consisting of little more than a
few tavernas. From here, there are beautiful coastal paths above the emerald
sea - stopping for a dip if we please, and we'll visit the amazing gorges of
Imbros and famous Samaria - taking a bus and taxi via Hania to Samaria, and
starting our descent later than most so that we have its amazing scenery
virtually to ourselves. At the bottom of the gorge, we will stay for a night at
Agia Roumeli's Hotel Calypso, and walk back along the coast to Loutro the next
day. There will also be a day-off from walking to enjoy the beautiful beach
around the headland - where you can swim as topless or bottomless as you wish!
(Ensuite single suppl. £10 a night). Guided by Diana.
Maria and Christina's Oasis
Rooms are comfortable and ensuite, with a balcony overlooking the sea, and a
kitchen area for breakfast. It is much simpler here to each buy our own food
for breakfast & packed lunches - much of which we can do at a good
supermarket on our way from the airport. We can then ask Maria to order us
fresh bread daily for breakfast, and we can buy butter, honey, yoghurt, cheese,
tomatoes and anything else we need at the little shop in Rothakino. In the
evenings we'll eat out at the tavernas by the sea (from £8).

A new WW holiday in Tuscany - staying
in attractive small villas in the Garfagnana valley to walk on the Apennines
and the Alpi Apuane.
Fuller detail
Our new Tuscany holiday takes
place in the magnificent, wooded Garfagnana valley, set between the green,
rolling Apennine mountains and the more rugged "marble mountains" of the Alpi
Apuane. Our walks will be through woods to attractive hillside villages, and on
rough mountain tracks where the 'ups' will be rewarded by extensive views as
far as the Ligurian coast. We will also have a day off from walking to visit
the beautiful walled city of Lucca with its marble clad churches and winding
streets, or to take time out and relax by the pool back at Casine Di
Bracciacorti where we stay. The Casine comprises of several small
chalets/villas converted from the original farm buildings plus a larger central
villa where we will have our meals. The food will be traditional Tuscan fare
prepared by our hosts - a real treat not to be missed! There are plenty ensuite
or standard singles available (Single supplements a night: £15 Ensuite,
£10 Standard). The grounds are extensive with space to wander, a large
swimming pool, and even a 6-hole golf course! Transport to the walks will be by
private minibus. The day out in Lucca will be by train taking in the stunning
scenery along the Serchio river. All meals are included except on the free day
when there are plenty of cafes to choose from in Lucca and a trip to the local
pizzeria in the evening is a must!

Intermediate & High Intermediate grades explained...
Intermediate - 8
miles, average 650m up & down
Do you love wonderful views
and don't mind the uphill effort to reach them? Intermediate holidays offer 6-8
mile walks on the mid-range hills, selecting those that will give the most
exciting views and most interesting walking. There is more 'up' and 'down'
involved than in the lower level grades: up to 750m (2500ft) of ascent, or
1-1.5 hours of walking uphill at a relaxed pace with stops to catch our breath.
The effort is rewarded by the satisfaction of just 'getting there', the
stunning views all around, and the general lack of people. Often there is then
a flatter ridge walk to follow with great views on each side before we descend.
If you're not
already familiar with these pleasures, this might be a chance to discover them
in good company. Intermediate paths vary more than on lower walks, being more
uneven, rockier, and sometimes steep or boggy in places. Our pace will be
easygoing and anyone with a reasonable level of fitness who doesn't mind hills
will be fine. For example, you might regularly walk 5 miles and feel you could
happily do more; or you might do some other form of regular exercise like
cycling, aerobics, or running.
High Intermediate
- 9 miles, average 800m up & down
Are you a high level walker and feel you've lost
fitness over the wiAre you a high level walker and feel you've lost fitness
over the winter? Or do you already love intermediate walks and want to go
higher? High Intermediate walks are stunning walks at the top end of the
Intermediate range, verging towards High Level: they more regularly involve
800m (2600ft) of ascent and descent and up to 9 miles in length. Some sections
will be as steep and rocky as High Level paths - particularly in the Lake
District - offering you an introduction to this kind of terrain.
This grade also
suits holidays where some of the days are longer than the Intermediate grade
even though the terrain is straightforward; and in winter you will find High
Intermediate holidays when short days and the threat of ice on the highest tops
prevent us offering the highest grades. If you are new to hill walking yet are
confident about your fitness, this grade (and 'Slow
High') may be best for your first venture into the mountains.
