Fuller detail
Have you ever wished for more confident map
reading skills? Well, whether you've done some before or are a complete novice,
this holiday is perfect for you. There will be 2 guides to cater for different
levels of previous map reading experience. One group will start from basics and
work up to using compasses - leaving with a secure sense of how to find your
way using a walking map, and how to find out where you are (and where you're
going!) by using map and compass together. The other group will start with a
compass refresher, then go on to apply compass techniques in more advance
situations - great if you've done Maps & Compasses before and want to
consolidate what you know and take it further. This holiday with Marian &
Yvonne is based at Glenthorne Guest House in Grasmere where there are lots of

valley; or the extensive woods and grounds of Cragside full of exotic trees
where we might see red squirrels. The whole of Coquetdale is steeped in history

Lady's Well pool at Holystone. Rothbury is a picturesque small town beside the
River Coquet with plenty of small shops and tea shops we can investigate after

stone circle, a spring-fed lake, and woods to explore. In addition to the

the Summerhouse - delightfully converted outbuildings offering a range of

2-9 May - Low Intermediate Mull 1
Full |
| Small hotel - Fran - Scotland |
|
| 7 nights full board, includes
trip to Iona : £650 |
A wonderful week exploring some of
Fran's favourite walks on Mull, staying in a comfortable women-run B&B
above a lovely deserted cove with views to die for!
Fuller detail
Mull is one of the largest of the Hebridean
islands off the west coast of Scotland. It has a long and strikingly beautiful
coastline of high cliffs and bays, with caves and rock arches, and views out to
the many smaller islands that surround it. Most notable of these is the 'Holy
Isle' of Iona where we will walk on one day. Another rewarding visit might be
to cathedral-like Fingle's Cave on the island of Staffa, whose geometrical
basalt pillars have even inspired a Mendelssohn overture! On other days we will
take beautiful walks along Mull's coastline, stopping at sandy bays, or walking
to other famous caves and rock features. Inland, our eyes will often be drawn
to the island's only munro, Ben Mor, and from a walk over its lower shoulder
there will be striking views back to the coast. We will be staying at women-run
Ardachy House Hotel on the south coast, overlooking the deserted sands of
Ardalanish Bay and the islands of Jura, Colonsay, and Islay. Iona is only 7
miles away; seals, otters and the elusive Corncrake are regular visitors to the
area, and there is a standing stone and Iron Age fort close by. The hotel
offers comfortable ensuite twin, double, and single bedrooms, and some of the
bedrooms and the residents' lounge have a lovely view towards the sea. Mull is
reached by train from Glasgow to Oban, then a magical ferry to Craignure on
Mull, & local bus from the ferry to Bunassen where Maggie & Cathy will
collect you. Guided by Fran.

Low Intermediate grade explained...
Low Intermediate
- 8 miles, average 350m up/down
Low Intermediate walks are
lovely walks of up to 8 miles that don't go much higher than gentle walks: to a
maximum ascent of 450m (or 1500ft) and often less than this. The paths may be
rockier in places than on gentle walks, and steeper for short distances. The
pace will tend to be a little steadier as we've further to go, but still with
plenty of stops along the way. You may be walking up a striking gorge in
Slovenia, exploring the length of a Lake District valley, or getting away from
it all in Northumberland. This grade is perfect if you love longer low walks /
or if you're new to walking but already do some other form of exercise fairly
regularly e.g. bike rides or aerobics.
