19-26 Jul - Gran Paradiso,

-hotel & refuges |
|
| 7 nights full board &
everything except flight: £535 |
A favourite trek into Italy's Gran
Paradiso National Park in the Western Alps, staying in a small hotel, then
refuges, with a choice of intermediate and high level walks each day (you carry
a day pack only!)
Fuller detail
An opportunity to spend a week in the splendour of the
Gran Paradiso National Park in Italy's Western Alps - with breathtaking views
all around, alpine flowers, marmots, ibex and chamoix! There will be 2 guides
to offer an Intermediate and a High Alpine choice each day (walking with a day
pack only - your luggage is transported for you). We start from Albergo Gran
Paradiso, Noasca, in the Valle del Orca, making our way over 2 days past
beautiful lakes to Col del Nivolet and spending a night on the way at valley
refuge Le Fonti. At Col del Nivolet we stop for 3 nights at Rifugio Citta di
Chivasso which is perched spectacularly above the lakes of Piano del Nivolet
and a whole new alpine valley. This wonderful traditional refuge has dormitory
beds, cold water washing, and excellent food in true Italian style. Here there
are walks at both levels, with stunning views of glaciers and distant ranges
including Gran Paradiso itself, or less rugged paths through flower filled
Piano del Nivolet. On the 5th day we return to Rifugio Le Fonti via an old
royal game trail - perhaps the best day of all, then back past quaint deserted
villages with frescoes to Noasca for our last night. The high walks are 'High
Alpine' on 2 days when there is more descent than usual.
The 3 nights of high refuge
life are a wonderful experience, but resources at altitude are limited, and
taking account of this is a necessary part of the holiday: use water sparingly,
hand wash rather than shower; solar power only - no power sockets available;
bottled drinking water.

stunning view over the lake. The wooded bridle path to Rydal village is also
delightful, and we might stop at White Moss Common - or Rydal Hall for tea
beside its tumbling beck. We can walk to beautiful Loughrigg Tarn (a small
lake), or climb the path beside Sour Milk Gill waterfall to Easedale Tarn in

stunning views from higher Dow Bank. For Intermediate walks we can explore the
several wonderful ridges of the area - Helm Crag, Blea Rigg, Steel Fell &

Olive groves & scented pine
woods
pebbly coves & little fishing villages
a monastery hidden
away in a gorge... this is the Dalmatian island of Brac.
Fuller detail
The Dalmatian island of Brac
lies off the coast from Split, threaded by lovely old mule tracks through olive
groves and pinewoods. Ancient chapels and monasteries dot the island while
along the rocky coast there are pebbly coves that invite a swim and small
picturesque fishing resorts. Sutivan is one of these - built of famous Brac
stone, and at night you can see the lights of Split across the water. Sutivan
has no hotels so we do as Croatians do and stay in small apartments, all within
walking distance of Pension Dora whose vine covered courtyard and
restaurant/bar we will use as our focal point. Here we will share breakfasts,
and meals on 4 evenings. On 3 evenings we'll eat out at seafront restaurants in
smaller groups (not included - from £8). The apartments are simple and
typically Croatian, some with ensuite rooms, others with 2 single rooms sharing
a bathroom and small kitchen. Some have a terrace for relaxing after walking,
others have sea views. At Pension Dora there are ensuite twins and singles.
Besides a choice of Gentle & Low Intermediate walks, we will also take a
day off to enjoy the sea, hire a bike or sea kayak, visit Diocletian's Palace,
or simply relax with a book! Guided by Lorraine, Madeline, & local guide
Ivana.

The last Malham break of the year -
hugely popular with mostly ensuite single rooms, a friendly atmosphere, lovely
décor, and a sauna & Jacuzzi (so bring your swimsuit even in
October!)
Fuller detail
The last opportunity of the year
to stay at High Trenhouse near Malham Tarn in the Yorkshire Dales. High
Trenhouse is a beautifully converted farm and barn on the edge of the moors
above Malham Cove and Gordale. The Pennine Way from Malham Cove passes close by
on its way over Fountains Fell to Pen-y-ghent, and across the moors are
interesting paths to the pretty village of Arncliffe and the li vely town of Settle with its tearooms and
small shops. High Trenhouse offers a large number of single rooms - a boon for
WW groups - and most have ensuite facilities. There are comfortable spaces for
relaxing or making our own fun including a small honesty bar, the food is
delicious, and there's even a sauna and Jacuzzi - so bring your swimsuit! A
choice of Gentle and Intermediate walks each day will allow you to move between
the grades to take it easy or stretch according to mood. We will also arrange
an inexpensive shared lift from nearby Settle station at approx 4pm.

24-28 Oct - Gentle Peak District
|
| Losehill Hall - Heidi -
Derbyshire |
|
Beautiful and varied gentle walks in
the Derbyshire Peak District with Heidi, returning to a warm fire at Losehill
Hall.
Fuller detail
This autumn Gentle Derbyshire break with
Heidi is based at comfortable Losehill Hall near Castleton where the landscapes
of the White and the Dark Peak meet. Losehill Hall is a lovely old Victorian
mansion set in its own extensive grounds 10 mins walk from Castleton village,
and all the rooms we've reserved here are small ensuite singles without a
supplement. Losehill Hall is the National Peak Park Study Centre, run on
eco-centre lines (everything is recycled, ensuite showers instead of baths,
communal tea/coffee facilities
). The Hall has a good bar, a comfortable
lounge, and the food served in the dining room is excellent. From here there
are lovely gentle walks to explore - beside the river to Hope with views across
Hope Valley, or into fascinating Cavedale, maybe including a visit to the
unique Blue John cavern. On one day we can take the bus to walk in Edale, or we
might want to stretch ourselves for the fabulous views from Mam Tor by taking a
gently ascending route onto this stunning broad ridge.

Intermediate |
| Guest house - Diana & Anne - Lake
District |
|
| 4 nights full board:
£325 |
An exciting choice of intermediate
walks as Grasmere takes on its full autumn colour...
Fuller detail
This holiday with Diana and Anne offers a
fab choice of Low Intermediate and High Intermediate walks on the Grasmere
fells - you choose which grade you prefer. For Low Intermediate walks, we might
start with the wonderful circuit of Loughrigg Fell, returning past pretty
Loughrigg Tarn; or else extend a walk to Easedale Tarn to include the wild
valley of Far Easedale valley. Another possible walk is the lovely circuit from
Elterwater via Little Langdale which includes a superb stretch of the Cumbria
Way; and we could finish on the last day with a wonderful 5-lakes view from
Silver How... For High Intermediate walks we could start with the Helm Crag
ridge with superb views back over Grasmere; or maybe walk up past Easedale Tarn
to Sargeant Man, returning along the Blea Rigg ridge. On other days we could
take the direct route from Grasmere up Fairfield for views of Striding Edge and
St Sunday Crag, or drive around to Great Langdale for a fabulous day on the
Langdale Pikes. As usual on Grasmere holidays we'll be based at Glenthorne
Guest House with its comfortable rooms and very good food - always a
favourite!

23-28 Dec 2009 - Christmas Break
|
| Glenthorne - Diana, Marian, Anita & Pam -
Grasmere |
|
| 5 nights full board:
£360 |
The popular WalkingWomen Christmas
Break is back! Again taking over Glenthorne G/H for ourselves! 4 walking groups
each day, 35 women - and lots of fun in comfortable surroundings!
Fuller detail
Does the idea of Christmas with
other women appeal? Walking, getting to know each other, eating well, playing
games, hoping for snow....!? Well, now's your chance! This year we will be
taking Glenthorne Guest House for ourselves again, sharing the cooking or
washing up and generally making merry. We'll be around 35 women with 4 guides,
and since the guest house sleeps more than this normally, there'll be a
relatively high number of single rooms available, as well as ensuite twins and
doubles. Glenthorne has a good sized lounge with an adjoining conservatory
which we could turn into a dancing space on some evenings! There's also a large
dining room and a table tennis/TV room.
One can never promise the full range of
grades at Christmas when the highest fells might be covered by snow or too icy
for easy walking. However with 4 guides available, we'll aim to cover as wide a
range of walking tastes as conditions allow. The variety of the walks possible
from Grasmere is part of its appeal as a Christmas venue. There are beautiful
gentle walks by the lakes or through woods, paths to waterfalls and tarns, or
going higher still there are Grasmere's fabulous ridges: Helm Crag, Blea Rigg,
Grasmere Common, Steel Fell, or the Heron Pike ridge above Alcock Tarn. For
fell tops with wonderful views, we can climb gentle Loughrigg Fell, or set our
sights on the Langdale Pikes - whatever the weather allows.
The meals will be vegetarian (and one fish
option), organic wherever possible, and with everyone helping in whatever
manner they feel able. After walking we can make our own entertainment - bring
favourite CD's and games.
Also bring whatever alcohol you prefer (can
be bought at Booths next to Windermere station if you're coming by train), and
any cakes or treats that you like at this time of year. If we each bring a
present worth max £8, we can put them in a sack and each draw one
out!
