Gentle wild life walks
These holidays are guided by Madeline our natural
history guide, and she will often stop to point out things you might otherwise
miss...
Suffolk Coast, Pembrokeshire, Gran Paradiso
National Park in the Italian Alps, Slovenia...
23-26 Apr - Gentle Suffolk
|
| Inn - Madeline - Dunwich |
|
| 3 nights part board:
£270 |
A gentle natural history break guided
by Madeline, based on the Suffolk Coast near Minsmere Nature Reserve.
Fuller detail
The Suffolk Coast is an Area of Outstanding
Natural Beauty, and centred along this coastal stretch is the ancient
settlement of Dunwich - once the seat of kings facing the North Sea. Later it
became a thriving port and ship building harbour with the power to elect 2
members of Parliament. However, over the centuries the sea has made serious
incursions along this stretch, and in the 14th century alone 400 houses, 2
churches, and several windmills 'succumbed to tempests'. Today Dunwich is
reduced to a quiet village on the edge of the sea with a fascinating history, a
small museum, and a ruined priory. Gentle paths fan out from the village
through Minsmere Nature Reserve, to the pretty estuary village of Walberswick,
or inland through fields and woodlands. In Dunwich we will be staying at The
Ship Inn - a former coaching inn which offers (recently upgraded) ensuite twin
and single rooms, and excellent pub fare in the evenings. Darsham station is 5
miles away by taxi. Guided by Madeline - our natural history guide. (Evening
meals are not included - from £15).

3-8 Jun - Gentle
Pembrokeshire |
| Small Hotel - Madeline - Wales |
|
| 5 nights full board (ex 1 meal):
£425 |
Another new holiday - enjoying
beautiful gentle walks in Pembrokeshire with sea views and wild flowers to die
for!
Fuller detail
The beautiful Pembrokeshire coastline is
blessed with a mild climate due to the proximity of the gulf stream. In spring
and early summer its clifftops are ablaze with wild flowers, while colonies of
sea birds nest along its cliffs, and seals, porpoises and dolphins can
sometimes be spotted swimming off shore. The area is perfect for gentle natural
history walks from the tiny cathedral city of St Davids - across the fields and
down winding lanes towards the sea, or taking the coastal shuttle bus to reach
other lovely walks a short distance away. From St Justinians we can reach the
RSPB reserve on Ramsey Island by ferry, and on other days we may finish at a
white sandy beach, or take our lunch enjoying a spectacular view from the
cliffs. This 5 night holiday with Madeline will be based at the friendly Eco
Hotel in St Davids, much enjoyed by previous WW groups. Here everyone can have
a single room, and only the ensuite singles carry a supplement (Ensuite single
supplement £5 a night). On 4 evenings we will have a good home-cooked
meal at the hotel, while on one evening we'll go out to eat at one of St Davids
small restaurants (not included - from £12.00). St Davids can be reached
by car, or by regular bus from Haverfordwest station.

19-26 Jul - Gran Paradiso,
Italy |
| Int & High Alpine - Anita & Madeline
-hotel & refuges |
|
| 7 nights full board &
everything except flight: £535 |
A favourite trek into Italy's Gran
Paradiso National Park in the Western Alps, staying in a small hotel, then
refuges, with a choice of intermediate and high level walks each day (you carry
a day pack only!)
Fuller detail
An opportunity to spend a week in the splendour of the
Gran Paradiso National Park in Italy's Western Alps - with breathtaking views
all around, alpine flowers, marmots, ibex and chamoix! There will be 2 guides
to offer an Intermediate and a High Alpine choice each day (walking with a day
pack only - your luggage is transported for you). We start from Albergo Gran
Paradiso, Noasca, in the Valle del Orca, making our way over 2 days past
beautiful lakes to Col del Nivolet and spending a night on the way at valley
refuge Le Fonti. At Col del Nivolet we stop for 3 nights at Rifugio Citta di
Chivasso which is perched spectacularly above the lakes of Piano del Nivolet
and a whole new alpine valley. This wonderful traditional refuge has dormitory
beds, cold water washing, and excellent food in true Italian style. Here there
are walks at both levels, with stunning views of glaciers and distant ranges
including Gran Paradiso itself, or less rugged paths through flower filled
Piano del Nivolet. On the 5th day we return to Rifugio Le Fonti via an old
royal game trail - perhaps the best day of all, then back past quaint deserted
villages with frescoes to Noasca for our last night. The high walks are 'High
Alpine' on 2 days when there is more descent than usual.
The 3 nights of high refuge
life are a wonderful experience, but resources at altitude are limited, and
taking account of this is a necessary part of the holiday: use water sparingly,
hand wash rather than shower; solar power only - no power sockets available;
bottled drinking water.

A lovely time to be walking in
Slovenia with Madeline before the season turns
Fuller detail
White dolomite mountains, crystal clear
lakes, hayracks and traditional villages, river gorges and tumbling
waterfalls
Slovenia is surely one of the most beautiful and friendly
places to visit in Europe! For this holiday we will be based in Bled on the
edges of the Julian Alps - a small resort town beside a jewel of a lake. Bled
is surrounded by meadows and beech woods. We can walk on good paths around the
lake and into the surrounding countryside - to pretty villages with their
wooden barns and ornate church spires, and to dramatic Vintgar Gorge. After
walking, we can sit in cafés by the lake, visit the castle, and row to
the island (or get a boatman to take us there!). On one day we will visit
lovely Lake Bohinj to walk along its shore. Here we can also take the Vogel
cable car to reach views of the Julian Alps, then catch the ferry back along
the lake (Cable car optional - £8). For this holiday we have reserved
ensuite single rooms at Penzion Vila Kolinska in a quiet residential part of
Bled. In the evening we'll walk back into the centre to explore Bled's good
places (evening meals not included - from £12). Guided by
Madeline.
